An unexpected gift

I received an unexpected gift today.  As I do nearly every Thursday night, I volunteered at the Palmetto Pregnancy Center's parenting class.  Each night, the clients are allowed to take a small gift home with them--sometimes children's hangers, a toothbrush, maybe a pack of diapers.  Tonight, for the first time in my experience, Selbia set out a basket of simply beautiful baby quilts.  These were handmade by a lady who donates them for the clients of the center.  I was amazed.  As a fellow crafter, I know how much time and effort went into each of these, even the most basic block pattern ones.

And, as is my nature, I was unable to keep my delight and amazement from spilling over during the class.  When Selbia announced the night's "gift" I added in stage whisper "And this is the first time I've ever seen her put these out...you should really take one because they're gorgeous!"  Later in the class, when Selbia suggested that someone make sure to get a quilt before leaving, I quickly brought the basket over and urged them to choose one.

To my surprise, Selbia invited me to take a quilt as well.  I was a little taken aback at first, because I had never even thought of taking something that in my mind belonged to the clients, but as I could see that there were several left, and that at least one client had chosen not to take one (I cannot even begin to fathom why not...), I selected one.

Now, as a crafter I did feel slightly better that I chose one that would not have taken as long to piece and assemble--it is a simple block design with less than 50 blocks on the whole quilt, compared to some others which were quite intricate.  I chose it based on the fabric patterns, which were just beautiful, rather than the intricacy of the design.  However, it was just so special to have a momento of the time I've spent volunteering at the center. I know whenever I do get the chance to use it, I will always think of Selbia and the other wonderful ladies I have met through the experience of being there.
