Getting ready to leave for Florence, saying goodbye to Federica. We very much enjoyed our stay here!
June 14, 12:50 pm, train to Florence
Well, we were supposed to be arriving in Florence right now, but our train has been sitting on the track for nearly 45 minutes not moving because the train ahead of ours had mechanical difficulties. However, we are sitting in a group of 8 tourists (the seats face each other with a table top in between) who all speak English! 4 from Australia, 2 from USA (us) and 2 from Great Britain. I am so not the outgoing person to strike up a conversation, but they are all so friendly (and speak ENGLISH!) and we've had now about 3 hours together, and it has been genuinely fun. One of my favorite parts of the trip, minus all of the pressure changes as we change altitude which are driving my eardrums crazy!
June 14, 5 pm, Uffizi Gallery,
After searching for a while, we finally found the sandwich shop I Fratellini (awesome, 2.50 € for a sandwich) recommended by Rick Steves and picked up lunch, then headed to the Uffizi Gallery. I am really pretty tired of museums by now, especially since we spent over an hour in line waiting for this one, which is yet another filled by nude art. I'm going to skip out on the museums tomorrow. This one is filled equal parts with classical art (mostly nude) and catholic art. Then a small section of art from foreign (non Italian) artists. I am spending a lot of time sitting and waiting for Alfred, but I don't mind that so much. What I mostly mind is spending the money which seems kind of wasteful to me since I'm not actually enjoying it all that much.
June 14, 9 pm, Turkuaz Doner Kebab
We are having dinner at this little Middle Eastern restaurant. Alfred and I ordered the beef Kebab, which we expected to be beef and veggies on a stick...but it is actually a wrap that is vaguely reminiscent of a gyro, and they are FANTASTIC! So delicious, and super filling for 5€! I totally recommend this place!
I'm you got to Florence safely and had some English-speaking company along the way! :)
