June 16, 7:00 am Hotel Locando Ochidea
Our earliest wake up yet. We have to be on the train leaving the station at 8:27. I am looking forward to the Venice trip, but not so much the 4 hour round trip train ride.
June 16, 10:30 am About to reach Venice!
Well, this train ride was certainly less fun than the one from Rome. =(. But, I did play some solitaire, and I think I was the source of entertainment from a couple (father and daughter I believe) who sat next to us from Bologna to Venice. The elderly gentleman was amazed at how fast I can shuffle cards...or at least I think that is what he was saying in Italian ;-).
June 16, 12:00 pm Ristorante alla Basilica
We took a Vaporetto (water bus) down the Grand Canal to St. Mark's Square, and visited the Basilica. Then, we were both hungry, so we took another Rick Steve's recommendation and found this great restaurant just beyond the square. It is a flat rate that includes a first course, main course (meat) and a vegetable, and 1/2 L water, plus bread. Alfred and I both ordered tortellini, which was amazing. He had the baked meat skewers and I had the tuna, and we both got a salad.
June 16, 5:00 pm Venice train station
Well, we wandered the city for several hours after lunch. We took a ride on a "fake" gondola (one that just crosses the canal and is WAY cheaper. I bought some Murano glass (a pendant necklace and earring set), a mask (scalloped metal, very pretty, not very traditional), and we purchased some incredible cherries at the fruit and vegetable market. We're now sitting at the train station playing 2 person Euchre until our train is ready for us to board.
June 16, 9:00 pm Internet Train Station
We made it in time to email for a bit! Long train ride, but it is OVER. However, 4 hour one tomorrow is not so much fun =(.
